Feng Shuyu

Feng Shuyu: member of CAE, researcher of CARS, and instructor of PhD students.

Currently serving as the executive director of China Railway Society, executive deputy director general and honorary director general of China Society of Engineering Blasting, honorary director of the Blasting Committee of China Railway Engineering Society, honorary director general of the Blasting Society of Beijing and Xian, emeritus professor of Southwest Jiao Tong University and honorary chief of the Blasting Institute of the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiao Tong University.

Born in Linshui County, Sichuan Province in June 1924, graduated from the School of Civil Engineering of Southwest Jiao Tong University in July 1948, studied engineering blasting at Leningrad Institute of Railway Transportation in the former Soviet Union in July 1951 and acquired associate doctoral degree in science and technology, and returned to China in November 1955.

Served as the engineer of Engineering Administration of Ministry of Railway, and transferred to CARS in 1958, founding and serving as the director of the Blasting Office of the Railway Structures Institute of CARS.

Feng Shuyu is a towering figure in the blasting engineering community of China. He created the design and calculation theories for blasting engineering in China.

He invented the blasting design method for the entire cutting and half cutting at mountainous and hilly regions in China in 1950s, and proposed such important concepts as upper rupture line on cutting slopes and “compression ring” for side slopes and foundation protections, as well as design principles and calculation parameters selection methods for cutting and half-cutting blasts.

He pioneered the directional blasting technique for dam building in the Sichuan-Guizhou and Guiyang-Kunming routes, which was further promoted to the building of 16 dams nationwide. He developed and published the “throwing accumulation calculation formula” for dams using the “volume balancing method” that has been widely applied in the engineering sector in China.

He was the first person to come up with the “deep-hole, smooth-wall” and pre-splitting blasting technique successfully applied in the Handan-Changzhi and Jiaozuo-Zhicheng routes which has helped improve the productivity, and created immense economic and social benefits. He also committed fully to the promotion of stonework mechanization for deep-hole blasting in railways.

He created the new type of construction method featuring underwater blasting and above-water operations for port and underwater tunnel dredging projects, and consolidated a compete package of underwater blasting design, construction know-how and safety know-how for underwater blasting that was fully applied in the dredging of the Three Gorges channel on Yangtze River, and the renovation of Qingdao and Dalian channels.

In the field of blasting control know-how, he established the theoretical foundation of controlled blasting technologies that was quickly promoted in urban constructions in China in the 1980s.

He also participated in the design of and technical supervision over a number of major blasting projects in China.

Feng Shuyu was appointed member of CAE in 1995.

And recruited as the chief expert of CARS in 2002.
